How can I let you know I’m ending my tenancy?

We’re sorry to hear you’re leaving us! 

If you’re planning to end your tenancy, you must let us know well in advance of your expected moving-out date. The notice you need to give is usually at least four weeks, but you should check your tenancy agreement as it might be different for you. You can find your agreement in your MyAccount. 

You can tell us by filling in the below tenancy termination form, or by phoning us on 0345 678 0555.

You’ll have to pay your rent until the end of your tenancy, even if you leave your home before that date.

What happens after I’ve told you I’m ending my tenancy?

Once you’ve been in touch with us about ending your tenancy, we’ll get in touch to arrange a visit from your housing partner, organising a time with you when they can stop by to run through a few things. 

When they visit, they’ll check your contact details and chat through your rent payments, and answer your questions. They’ll also inspect your home, talk to you about any outstanding repairs and decide how you’re going to return your key. 

How can I prepare to end my tenancy?

As well as letting us know you’re ending your tenancy and having a visit from our team, you should also make plans for the following: 

  • ensure you have a plan to pay rent for the rest of your tenancy
  • make sure your home, garden and any other outside areas are clean and tidy
  • complete any repairs you’re responsible for 
  • make arrangements to remove your furniture, carpets and curtains
  • remove any rubbish – speak to the council for removal of large items
  • let us know your new address
  • book a qualified electrician or Gas Safe registered engineer to safely disconnect any gas or electrical items you’re taking with you

You need to make sure your personal belongings are out of your home on the day your tenancy comes to an end. If you don’t, your agreement with us says that we can dispose of it without any liability. 

Make sure your home is clean, tidy, free of damage and in good condition when you move out.

Who else should I notify I’m moving out?

As well as letting Accent know, you should also tell the following organisations.

  • the council tax office at your local authority
  • your utility company (gas, electric, water) – ask your suppliers to take a final meter reading to calculate your final bill – this could help you avoid any disputes later down the line
  • if you have a landline, tell your phone company so they can disconnect you
  • Royal Mail – you can set up a mail redirection with them directly, or at your local post office
  • TV Licensing 

There might be more people or organisations you need to tell you’re moving out, like home contents insurance providers, employers, or family and friends – why not make a list of everyone you need to tell you’ve moved to make things easier?

What should I remember on the day I move out?

It’s moving day! Although it’s a very busy time with lots to do, there are a few important things you mustn’t forget, including:

  • take meter readings for gas, electricity and water and submit a final reading to your utility companies
  • return your keys to us
  • tell us your new address if you haven’t already 
  • make sure your rent account is clear
  • turn off all your services at the mains – if you’re removing gas or electrical appliances, make sure there are no bare wires or open gas pipes

What happens after I move out?

Once you’ve returned your keys to us, we’ll inspect your property to check the condition it’s in before the new tenant moves in. 

  • we’ll check if any repairs are needed, and charge you for any you’re responsible for
  • we’ll take any belongings you’ve left behind for 28 days and store them (you’ll have to cover the storage costs), then dispose of them after 28 days
  • if you’ve paid and registered a deposit with the deposit protection scheme, and all is in order, we’ll arrange for this to be returned
