What to expect when we replace your windows or doors

We regularly upgrade our properties' windows and doors, helping to keep your home comfortable, safe and up to modern standards, and ensuring the exterior of the building is well maintained.

 

This happens whenever they’re due for replacement according to our planned maintenance programme, which is every 30 years.

We’ll remove your old windows and fit new ones, which are usually durable, energy-efficient UPVC windows with sealed double-glazed units (subject to planning permission). In some cases, we might fit timber or aluminium windows.

All our windows have high-quality draught proofing and insulation, helping reduce heat loss and keep down the cost of your heating bills. They also have security features like locks and opening restrictors to ensure your home is as safe and secure as possible.

If your home has patio or french doors, we’ll usually replace these at the same time. 

We’ll contact you to let you know about plans to upgrade your windows and doors, and which of our contractors will be carrying out the work. 

Our contractor will get in touch to introduce themselves and explain what sort of work they’ll be doing. They’ll let you know if you have any choices in colour or design and clarify how long they expect the work to take. They’ll also put you in touch with a liaison officer who will chat to you about any access arrangements and contact you before the work starts. They will be your main point of contact for any general questions you might have. 

From time to time there might be unexpected changes to the schedule. We’ll keep you posted if this happens.

Asbestos surveys

Before the work starts, we might also want to carry out an asbestos survey in your home. This is a routine safety check, and nothing to worry about. 

We need to check there’s no hidden asbestos which could be disturbed when work is being carried out. If we do need to do a survey, our specialist contractor Environtec will contact you directly. 

Not every home needs an asbestos survey. 

If possible, we’ll be able to offer you a selection of door colours and styles to choose from, as long as planning permission doesn’t prevent us from doing so. 

The liaison officer will be in touch before the work starts to tell you what you need to do. This may include removing your curtains, blinds and any items on the window ledges, and removing any furniture in front of the windows.

Just to let you know, if you need to refit any blinds or curtains due to revised sizes, this will be your responsibility.

If you have any special needs which make it difficult for you to lift or move large items, our contractor may agree to move furniture or flooring for you.

However, they can’t accept any liability for damage to your belongings so they might ask you to sign a form to say you agree to this. 

It will normally take one to two days to fit your windows and doors, and any that we remove will be replaced on the same day. 

When the work is completed you will be shown how to operate your new windows including how to lock and unlock them, and how to operate the trickle vents. They’ll also give you information on how to look after your new windows and doors.

Other operatives will follow and finish off any work that needs doing after the windows are fitted, should this be needed. When the work is finished, our contractor and planned works project manager might come to your home to inspect the completed work. 

You can expect some noise during the maintenance, and the contractor will need to be in and out of your home. 

You might not be able to use some of your rooms while the work’s being completed, but you’ll always have at least one room for you to be in. Access to your home shouldn’t be affected. 

The safety of you and your family, and our contractors, is our top priority, and the works will be fully supervised by a site manager through to completion.

Our contractors should always wear the correct PPE (personal protective equipment) but if you’ve got any concerns this isn’t happening, let us know – we’ll never risk your safety, and neither should our contractors.

In some cases, we will upgrade our homeowners’ windows and doors, but only if this is outlined in your agreement with us that we’re responsible for their repair and maintenance. If you want to replace the windows yourself, and your agreement says this is your responsibility, you might still need our permission before you go ahead.

Respect for you in your home

Our friendly contractors will always treat you and your home with respect. 

You can expect them to clean up their mess and pack away equipment at the end of each day. 

When the work is completed you will be shown how to use any new equipment and left with the relevant instruction manuals.
